There are some lucky people in Asheville, North Carolina. Some enterprising Greeks who live in this Western North Carolina hamlet are having olive oil shipped from their farm in Messinia, Greece (where my family is from!), and supplying it for sale in local stores and for use in some restaurants.
Check out this story in the Asheville Citizen-Times. The Theros family sells the oil locally and through their website, www.therosoliveoil.com. I haven't tried it yet, but I aim to.
The photos on Theros' website, by the way, are absolutely breathtaking. Check them out here.
My wife and I have toyed with the idea of importing olive oil from Greece and selling it locally, and one of the things we've debated is whether or not it's cheaper to have the oil bottled in Greece and shipped here, or to ship it here in bulk, and do the bottling in the US. A business friend seems to think it would be cheaper to bottle oil in Greece. But apparently, the Theros family have figured it out the other way. -- Costas
